How to get more customers for your machinery workshop

18 June 2026 · 6 min read

Many industrial machinery workshops depend almost entirely on word of mouth and a handful of lifelong customers. As long as there is work, nobody worries; but the day one of those big customers switches supplier or scales back its activity, the gap is keenly felt. Attracting customers steadily is not a matter of luck or of spending heavily on advertising: it is about following a few simple steps and being consistent. These are the ones that truly move the needle.

Know your ideal customer

Before looking for customers, you need to know who you are looking for. Serving construction firms with a fleet of heavy machinery is not the same as serving farmers, rental companies or other workshops that subcontract to you. Each profile has different needs, urgencies and ways of making decisions. Define two or three types of ideal customer and ask yourself: what problem do you solve better than anyone?, what do they value —speed, proximity, specialisation in a particular brand—? and where do they search when a machine breaks down? All the customer acquisition that follows will be easier and cheaper if you are clear on these answers.

Your Google listing and reviews

When someone's machine breaks down, the first thing they do is search on their phone for «machinery repair + their area». If your workshop does not appear, it does not exist for that customer. That is why your Google Business listing is, today, your best salesperson:

  • Complete the listing in detail: services, opening hours, phone, service area and real photos of the workshop and of completed jobs.
  • Ask for reviews systematically. After every job well done, ask the customer to rate you. Reviews are the social proof that decides the most.
  • Always respond, to the good ones as well as the criticism. A polite reply to a bad review conveys more confidence than having no complaints at all.

A well-kept listing with recent reviews can bring in more new customers than any advert, and it is free.

A simple website that converts

You do not need a huge website, you need a website that turns each visitor into a call or a message. That means: making it clear within the first few seconds what you do and who for, showing your service area, keeping the phone number visible at all times and a contact button that is easy to tap from a mobile. Add photos of real jobs and a few case studies or testimonials. A slow, confusing page with no phone number in sight scares customers away; a simple, direct one converts them.

Word of mouth and loyalty

Word of mouth will remain your best source of customers, but you can prompt it rather than wait for it. A happy customer who comes back and recommends you is worth far more than a new one who does not return. To look after them: meet the deadlines you promise, give warning before any surprises arise in the quote and follow up after major repairs. Small touches —remembering a machine's annual maintenance, a call to check that everything is going well— turn a one-off customer into a loyal one who, what's more, speaks well of you.

Partnerships with those who already have your customers

Some companies are already in contact with your ideal customers every day: machinery dealers and salespeople, rental companies, spare-parts suppliers or insurers. Reaching agreements with them is one of the most profitable ways to win recurring work. A machinery salesperson needs a trusted workshop to send their buyers to; a rental company needs someone to maintain its fleet. Within the Almacar ecosystem itself, the connection with Almacar Shop and Almacar Rent is a good example of how sales, rental and service feed one another.

Measure where your customers come from

If you do not measure, you do not know what works and you end up spending effort and money blindly. Ask a simple question with every new customer: «how did you hear about us?», and write it down. Within a few months you will know how much Google brings you, how much word of mouth and how much each partnership. With that data you can reinforce what brings in customers and stop pushing what does not. Attracting customers steadily is, in the end, repeating what works and measuring it to improve it.
